The Line Leadership Cannot Cross To Maintain Performance

I was on a call with a VP the other day who was stuck in a bad headspace.

She has been burning the candle at both ends to make sure the company and her team keeps moving forward, while ignoring her own wellbeing.

Like nearly 92% of senior leaders, she is on the verge of burnout.

During our call, we began discussing why she had let things get so bad and more importantly I asked her “How long will you wait?”.

And she replied, “Wait for what?”.

I said, “Until you hit the intolerable red line”.

If you take a look at this model, in its simplest form you can see that from where you are today you have three possible futures. You can either stay the same, get better, or get worse.

The farther you go into the future, the farther the gap becomes between where you are and where you want to go.

Over time, if you stop doing the things you know you should be doing in order to perform at your best, you will start to DRIFT and end up heading towards an outcome that you may not recover from so easily.

On top of that, your performance as a leader starts to diminish and that can begin to trickle into the rest of the organization trying to keep up to your behavior of working non-stop, and we know employees are often trying to match what leadership demonstrates.

If you find yourself heading into a downward spiral, ask yourself “How long will I wait?”.

How long until enough is enough?

If you are trying to perform at a high level and are burning the candle at both ends, it’s only a matter of time before you cross a line where you find yourself in what might feel like a “crisis” situation.
