How To Get Out Of A Funk

One of the biggest challenges we all face today is to catch depressive thoughts before they become too big to handle.

I know first hand from past experience that it can be a slippery slope, and you have to be the hero of your own story and recognize when you are getting into a bad frame of mind and catch yourself as early as possible.

Last week was a challenging week for me. I have moved to a new home (lots of change), lost my roommate, I had a relationship end, my “garage project” completed which meant I have more time on my hands, and after a few things didn’t go as planned for work, next thing you know I was down for the count.

In this video, I share three steps to begin to turn your negative thoughts around, and my favourite strategy to do this.

  1. Retrace Your Steps – What got you here?
  2. Identify Low Hanging Fruit – What’s the easiest fix to start with?
  3. Take Action – Immediately!

For me, I let go of my morning routine. I stopped reading, journalling, sticking with my regular exercise routine, and wasn’t leaving the house. I also started to have a drink in the evening.

So, to reverse this… step number one. Quit the drinks.

Two, go hang with some friends.

Three, get back into my morning routine… and then, yep, things start to fall into place again.

In the video I use some other examples, but the idea is to reverse the process. What were the negative behaviours that got you into the mess you are in today?

And what do you have control over? How can you take control and turn those things around?

Let me know any thoughts you have in the comments below.
